Known most commonly as "The Father of Science Fiction," Hugo Gernsback was an amazing person. After coming to the United States in February 1904, from Luxenbourg, he founded an electronics publishing business that went from Modern Electrics in 1908 through Poptronics in 2002. In between there were ventures into Sexology, Flying, Science Fiction, and many other titles. A prolific inventor with some 50 patents to his name, his life story is fascinating to say the least.
This biography, was found in a musty old box when we closed down the business in 2002. It was written for Hugo at his request and the original manuscript pages bear his hand-written comments and corrections. I had the great pleasure as the final owner of Gernsback Publiscations to re-edit and publish this work, which documents his life, his dreams, his thoughts and tells an accurate story of his life as he saw it.
Available in soft cover and running some 695 pages, it has been available from since 2007. Now, for the first time it will be available in electronic form. Enjoy!
Hugo Gernsback A Man Well Ahead of His Time eBook Larry Steckler
My review is based on a skim. There's lots of interesting errors here, and some pictures of Hugo that haven't been widely available, but there are obvious errors of fact that throw the entire book into question. One glaring mistake (that I believe owes more to Gernsback partisanship than actual error) is the statement that Gernsback was given the "original" Hugo Award and proclaimed the "Father of Science Fiction".
The reality is - Hugo was given a special Hugo Award in 1960 for his contributions as the father of "magazine" science fiction; The Hugo awards predate 1960 by 7 years, so not only were they honoring Hugo for a contribution to SF (not the whole field), it wasn't the original; some 39 Hugo Awards had already been awarded previously.
And, not to put too fine a point on it, Hugo's "Hugo" was a "special committee award", not strictly a "Hugo" award.
Hugo Gernsback absolutely deserves recognition as the "Father of Magazine Science Fiction"; I'd even go so far as to say that he deserves recognition as the person who established the definition of the genre itself, but this book does itself no favors by proclaiming facts that are nor accurate, especially when their inaccuracy is so easily checked.

Hugo Gernsback A Man Well Ahead of His Time eBook Larry Steckler Reviews
This is an excellent bio/autobio with TERRIBLE editing as an ebook. In fact I suspect NO editing. No reading would give you these results of machine processing.
Still, it is worth reading. Gernsback was a pivotal man in many respects and we can see the results of his work today in our continuing "American" experience. He just deserves better handling!
